Building the flies
So, having expanded my interest in flyfishing to actually tie my own flies, I seem to spend most evenings in front of the telly with my wife watching something and me spreading a wide variety of strange materials on the sofa and the surrounding area.
Apart from the strange smell from some of the materials and the post-tying tidy frenzy, it's great fun. I have so far managed to produce a fair number of indestinct flies using the materials at hand.
But I am new to all this. T(r)ying to get the basics down, I've concentrated on a few simple patterns and improvised where my material stash falls short. Particularly the dubbing process has been a challenge for me. I don't own a dubbingtwister and while the investment is insignificant, I am determined to learn the dubbing process without this very strange tool. I have thus decided to go for some dubbing wax instead. Strange little stick of...well, sticky stuff to aid the adherence of the dubbing material to the thread. I'm not sure if it's me, the dubbing itself, the thread or the wax, but it's only made it ever so slightly easier to do. Practice must make perfect, so I'll continue my efforts for the perfect dub.
I'll do my best to try and post some photos of my creations so far.
